A wildlife documentary has been happening outside our house. The herring are spawning, and I reckon they’re spawning right in the lagoon because there’s a crazy amount of activity there at the moment.

On any given day recently, we’ve seen 30-40 pelicans, 20 seals and sea lions, and a gazillion gulls, all taking advantage of the easy meal. I assume the fish were plentiful, because the pelicans didn’t bother flying too high before bombing down at speed to scoop up their prey. The gulls must have been trying to stay dry, because they didn’t bother to dive for the fish. Instead, they waited until the pelicans had caught lunch, and stole it from them. Meanwhile, the sea lions swam around calmly, waiting for food to come to them.

The spawning will last only a week, so we need to make the most of the show.

The water must be warm to have Pelicans here this late. We’ve seen them in HMB, Ocean Beach, and Pacifica too.
