The road to Sweet Sixteen

Gabriella turned 16 on Wednesday. It was a big one because the major birthday celebration here isn’t 18, but 16.

Celebrating your 18th makes sense in Britain because kids can not only vote, but also drink legally for the first time. In America, kids can’t drink alcohol until they’re 21 (Gabriella’s written an essay on why that age is stupid and causes more problems than it fixes).

However, what they can do at 16 that they couldn’t do before is take a driving test and become logistically independent of their parents. No wonder kids get excited about their 16th birthdays. Gabriella’s test is in a few weeks.
